The word 'hooker' was
allegedly a name given to streetwalkers in
Corlaer's Hook, a place in lower Manhattan that
was notorious for prostitution and commonly
known to be frequented by sailors.
The term "hooker" has
probably been around since the mid 1850's.
There is some claim
that the name originated from General Joe
Hooker, who during the Civil War spent so much
time in the red light district of New Orleans,
that the area became known as "Hooker's
Division", in tribute to the General. The
prostitutes that the General like to keep around
him, became known as Hooker's ladies - then just
hookers. Apparently the General even allow some
of his soldiers to keep prostitutes in their
barracks.
